Peter Alan Cody

September 24, 1948 - October 15, 2020

Peter Alan Cody of Upper Black Eddy, Pa passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 15, 2020 at his home at the age of 72 surrounded by loving members of his family.
Peter was born in St. Michael’s Hospital, Newark, N.J. to John and Mary Cody.  He attended St. Rose of Lima School in the Roseville section of Newark, graduated from Essex County Vocational and Technical High School in 1969 and attended Essex Community College.  He has been a resident of Upper Black Eddy since 2018.  Prior to his recent move to Bucks County, Peter resided in Tenafly NJ for sixteen years.   While Peter worked in security for many years, he was most recently employed as a driver for Superior Distributors, Elmwood Park NJ.  As a road warrior, Peter really found his niche with Superior Distributors and he was a valued employee.  He loved embarking each day on a route that took him in all directions in the tristate area.  He said each day was an adventure on the road, with puzzles to solve, new areas to explore, reliance on his own wit and will and love of the open road.  Peter retired in 2010 and continued experiencing the open road but this time in a more leisurely fashion.  He and his wife Susan took many trips in their camping van visiting family around the county and enjoying our National Parks.  His favorite trips were to Utah, Yellowstone National Park, and Cody, Wyoming.

Peter had a life-long interest in trains and trollies and early public transportation.  He would travel for miles to ride on a steam powered engine, visit a train or trolley museum, or check out Horseshoe Curve, train trestles, train yards or turntables.  Roadside America was a favorite.  He was a history buff and our nation’s historic sites were on the top of his list for visits.

He is survived by his beloved spouse Susan Cody (nee Kiley) whom he married in 2012. Peter was the proud father of six cherished children:  Jennifer (Jeff Shoell), David, Brian (Erin), Mary, Jeffrey and Lauren.  He was also delighted by his beautiful grandchildren: Ciara Anne, Erin, Jackson, Nathaniel Robert, and Theo Grace.

Peter was a devoted son to his mother Mary and father John and the youngest sibling in a family of five boys.  That position in the family taught him many life lessons.  He is survived by his brother Rev. John Cody C.Ss.R. of Liguori, MO, brother James and his wife Patricia of Brick NJ, and brother Raymond and his wife Rosemarie of Warren NJ and sister-in-law Judy Cody.   Peter was pre deceased by his brother Fredric.  Peter will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews and their children, his cousins, and Susan’s children, grandchildren, and extended family.

Peter was well known for his NY Yankee hat which he always wore.  To many friends he was known as “Pete the hat” or just “the hat.”  He felt most at peace in two places:  his home in the beautiful countryside of Bucks County and the SMA (Society of African Missions) in Tenafly where he attended mass and devotional services.  Many thought of Peter as a man of few words but as an ancient Greek once said:  “Do not say a little in many words but a great deal in a few.”

Family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at St. John the Baptist Church, 4050 Durham Road, Ottsville, PA  18942 at 12:00 Noon – 1:00 PM, followed by Peter’s Mass of Christian burial at 1:00 PM.

Peter had great compassion for children with cancer and supported St Jude Children’s Research Hospital for many years.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude’s, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the SMA Fathers, 23 Bliss Ave, Tenafly, NJ 07670.  Arrangements by Donahue Funeral Home, Flourtown. (215) 348-9421.

Condolences 2

kelley cody I'm so sorry for your loss. I will always remember Uncle Pete as a creative and funny man. I have a beautiful photo of me as a baby that he took over 50 years ago that until recently was hanging on my living room wall. James, convinced that the photo is of him, has taken it to Boston where it lives on in his living room.
