Iris Marion Smith  1936-2022

Iris Smith of Portland, Oregon, born April 19th, 1936, passed away October 26th, 2022 in Tigard, Oregon due to recurring breast cancer. She is survived by her sisters, Sheila Martin and Sandra Oslund, brother, Thomas Kemp, daughter Shirley Smith Thiel (Michael), son, Robert Smith (Lynnea) and grandchildren Tullia Brazill and Sargon Smith. She is preceded in death by her sister, Carol Wilson and brother, Timothy Kemp, husband, Thomas, parents, Chester Kemp and Evelyn (Haas) Kemp, sons Thomas Smith and Daniel Smith, daughters Linda Smith and Nancy (Smith) Brazill, and grandson Christopher Hanson.

Iris and Thomas E. Smith met when she was just 14 years old. They were married on November 10, 1952. They raised six children together in Portland. She took care of him when he was suffering from congestive heart failure, then he passed away shortly before their 49th wedding anniversary.

Iris was an traditional homemaker. She crocheted many lovely items such as tablecloths and doilies. She made many quilts that she then gave away to family and various charities. She canned food during the summer so that we would have delicious fruits and vegetables in the winter. She enjoyed painting “money trees”. She loved to write stories and poems. She was interested in genealogy and researching the family tree. Her favorite movie genre was action movies. Iris amassed a large collection of old dolls, figurines, and depression glass through the years because it reminded her of her childhood. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

Iris’ wishes will be honored and no services will commence at this time.  Her choice to be cremated will also be honored by her family. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Community Warehouse, in Iris’ honor.
