Allen L. Wise

July 13, 1927 - November 18, 2022

Allen L. Wise passed peacefully at his home in Elk Grove on Friday, November 18, 2022.  Allen L. Wise was born on July 13, 1927, the third son to Elma and Porter Wise in Jo Daviess County, Illinois.  He grew up on the family dairy farm and graduated from Stockton High School in Illinois in 1945.  Allen was drafted and served in the U. S. Army from September 18, 1945 to March 12, 1947, spending some time in Germany as a part of the Constabulary Forces.  He then attended college on the G.I. Bill and got a BA in History from the University of Dubuque in Iowa.  He continued his education at the University of Iowa and earned an MA in History and another MA in Education.  He taught high school in Iowa and elementary school in Michigan before coming to CA and teaching in Cambrian District, San Jose, CA until his retirement in 1982. Allen married Rosie in March of 1969 and they moved to Santa Clara.  Allen, Rosie and their daughter Karen enjoyed traveling and entertaining. Allen was a docent at the San Jose Historical Society for 18 years before their move to Elk Grove, CA in 2001.  He then became a docent with the Elk Grove Historical Society to continue sharing his love of history.  He also shared his love of history in his portrayal of historical characters, complete with costumes.  Allen was a member of Kiwanis in San Jose, Optimists in Elk Grove, West Valley Presbyterian Church, Cupertino; Parkside Community UCC Church in Sacramento and Historical Societies in San Jose and Elk Grove.  He was a loving husband, dad and grandpa.  He will be missed by many for his stories and humor.  Allen is survived by his wife, Rosie, daughters, Karen Dickinson, Elk Grove, Lisa Sherman, Bonney Lake, WA and grandchildren, Stephanie Dickinson, Sacramento, Brian Bates, Elk Grove, Jessica (Aaron) Gleesing, Seattle, WA, and Eli Sherman, Bonney Lake, WA.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and extended family who shared his life.  He made a difference.  There will be a Celebration of Life at Parkside Community UCC Church, 5700 South Land Park Dr, Sacramento, CA 95822 on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 1:00 pm. In person or online at ParksideUCC.org/Allen. Contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
