Joseph St. Clair Witcher

September 27, 1931 - December 22, 2022

Joseph S. Witcher was born on September 27, 1931, in Williamson, West Virginia. He was the sixth child of thirteen born to the union of William B. and Alva (Berger) Witcher. After graduating from Liberty High School in Williamson, West Virginia, he entered the Air Force and served in the Korean War. 

After settling in San Francisco, CA, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (1969) from the University of San Francisco, Ca, and his MBA (1973) from San Francisco State University. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, the San Francisco Gamma Chi Lambda Chapter. While in San Francisco, he met and married Katherine (Kay) Chivers; together, having three sons. Their marriage ended in 1979.  

During a Liberty High School reunion, he met fellow alumna Viola “Joilie” Strother, and they were married in 1992. Joseph retired from the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA), where he worked as a Senior Auditor for over 30 years. A practicing Catholic and a student of the Bible, Joseph was a proud teacher of Sunday School at the Ingleside United Presbyterian Church in San Francisco for over 20 years. Joseph was a chess player and loved books. He was a proud citizen of San Francisco for more than 50 years but always remembered his roots in Williamson, West Virginia. 

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and seven brothers.

Joseph and his wife Jolie transitioned on December 22, 2022. He is survived by his three sons, Joseph St. Clair Witcher Jr. of San Leandro, CA, William Calvin Witcher (and spouse Cynthia) of La Habra, CA, and Curtis Chivers Witcher of Rancho Cordova, CA. Two sisters; Elizabeth Witcher Davis of Cleveland, OH; Ruth Witcher Marrow of Clarksville, VA; two brothers; John Witcher (and spouse Shirley) of Daly City, CA, and Gordon R. Witcher (and spouse Silvia) of Ocala, Fl., ex-wife Kay Witcher of Reno, NV, four grandchildren, Madison Kay, Curtis Jr., William Lee, Larry Calvin, and a host of nephews, nieces, and other relatives.
