Denis Joseph McCarthy - Obituary

Denis Joseph McCarthy died peacefully on August 10, 2023 surrounded by his family and friends. He was 97 years old.
Denis was born in London, England on July 13, 1926 to parents Elizabeth Isabel and Joseph Patrick. Having a strong sense of family, he had a wonderful affection for his older brother, John Stephen and sister, Eileen Lillian.

In 1939, at the beginning of WW2, Denis was fostered and moved outside of London for safety. He lived with five different foster families between the ages of 13 - 15. Upon his 18th birthday, Denis was conscripted, and served for her Majesty’s Armed Forces until the end of the war. After the war and the subsequent death of his brother, Denis moved to Canada, where he attended and excelled at the ‘University of Toronto’. He completed his education and moved to San Francisco, where he met the love of his life, Kathryn Diane Gaddy. They ultimately ended up in Mill Valley, where they raised their family and he lived until his death. Denis had an aptitude for mathematics and offered actuarial services in San Francisco for 40 years.

Denis had a love of all animals and was an avid horseman - briefly competing in Show jumping. He also had a fond affection for his many dogs and cats : Mushroom, Banzai, Lucy, Jamie, Berenger, the ‘Princess of Kiev’, Spike, Aka, Zeus, Bummer, Pubie and Fubby.

He is survived by his son Patrick Charles (Vanessa Jennings), son Mark Stephen aka Mykaell and granddaughter Gabriella Kathryn. He is also survived by his niece Delia Triggel (David) and grand niece, Henrietta Ridgeon.

He was preceded in death by his parents Elizabeth Isabel and Joseph Patrick; his brother John Stephen; his sister Eileen Lillian and his beloved wife Kathryn Diane

We ask that all donations be made in his name to the American Lung Association.
