Virginia Harrell Shreeve

January 07, 1937 - October 30, 2023

Virginia Lou (“Ginny”) Harrell Shreeve passed away at her home in Del Mar on October 30, 2023, following a brief illness. Born in Arkansas on January 7, 1937, to Methodist minister Van Wesley Harrell and his wife, Lula Brady Harrell, Ginny’s faith and love for family and friends were guiding forces in her life. Her warm smile, generous nature and wonderful sense of humor will be deeply missed by all those whose lives she touched. Ginny is survived by her three children, Kay Marie (“KayRee”) Shreeve, Michael Shreeve (Therese), and Jane Lea Smith (Jim), and by her three grandchildren, Emma Smith, Morgan Saucet and Spencer Shreeve.

Ginny graduated from the University of Arkansas, where she studied Speech and Language and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. For many years, she and her husband, Kent, ran a successful engineering firm in Arkansas and Louisiana. In 1984, Ginny moved with her children to La Jolla, California where she led a fulfilling second career as an English teacher and admissions director at The Evans School.

Ginny played tennis throughout her life and was known for her skill, grace and sportsmanship on and off the court. Over the years she was a devoted “dog mom” to German shepherds and standard poodles; she never met a dog she didn’t love.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, January 6th, at La Jolla United Methodist Church. Those who wish to remember Ginny in a special way are encouraged to make donations in her name to a charity of their choosing.
