William "Bill" Eugene Gay

In Loving Memory of William "Bill" Eugene Gay

William Gay, a devoted father, Papa, brother, and thoughtful soul, passed away surrounded by loved ones in Phoenix, Arizona, after a life rich in spirit, intellect, and love. Born and raised in Chicago, William carried the grit and warmth of the city with him wherever he went, eventually finding a sense of peace in the desert landscapes of the Southwest.

William graduated from Argo Community High School and later earned his degree from Olivet Nazarene University. His education reflected his lifelong passion for learning and his deep curiosity about the world.

A man of profound faith, William was deeply rooted in his Russian Orthodox Catholic beliefs. His spirituality guided his life, grounding him in ritual, meditation, and a search for deeper meaning. He was particularly drawn to the sacred traditions and histories of Mongolian, Tibetan, and Russian cultures—an interest that spoke to his reverence for the ancient, the mystical, and the enduring.

William was a voracious reader and a gifted writer, endlessly engaged in the world around him. From politics and foreign affairs to philosophy and poetry, he sought to understand the great questions of life and never shied away from thoughtful conversation. He loved nature- mountains, waterfalls, and quiet places brought him joy. His love for The Beatles and Aerosmith often echoed through his days.

Above all, William loved his family. He was the proud father of three children—Ashley Alexandria Gay (deceased), Stephany Ann Gay, and Alexander (Sasha) St. Michael Gay—and the beloved grandfather "papa" of five: Audrey Gay (17), Jace William Benoit (3), Sylis Walter Gay (12), Jasper Gay (4), and Winry Gay (1). He often said he loved his children and grandchildren more than life itself, always saying “If I were a king, my children and grandchildren would be the jewels on my crown.” He also had many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.

He is survived by his mother, Darlene Jarrett Gay;  his sister, Jeanne Gay; his brother Michael Gay and his lifelong friend and the mother of his children, Kathleen Kelly. He is preceded in death by his father, Walter Andrew Gay, and his daughter Ashley Alexandria Gay, whom he held dearly in his heart always

William was also a great friend—loyal, kind, and always willing to listen. He built deep, lasting friendships across the country, touching lives everywhere he went with his generosity, wisdom, and unmistakable warmth. His circle of friends was as wide as it was meaningful, a true testament to the life he lived and the love he gave.

William’s life was a testament to love, faith, and the pursuit of wisdom. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched, the family he cherished, and the values he lived by every day—with humility, grace, and strength. He will always be loved and missed.

Juliana Hill This was the most beautiful obituary I have ever read. It really captured the essense of who Bill was to his friends and family. I will miss his wisdom, humor and knowledge. He got me through some very difficult times by being a great listener and a compassionate person who didn't judge. He was on my short list of people I could always count on to be that listening ear and I will miss him so very much. Rest in peace my dear friend. I hope St Michael is there with you and you find all the joy you deserve. "Pauuuuli" and I are sending you an enormous hug from down here and hope to see you again in the next life. xoxo
