We lost our beloved Mother, Era Elaine Haynes Hanback Loftis, on November 25, 2025 after a brief illness. Era was born on January 18, 1933 to Delmer Ellis and Lila Beatrice (Barrett) Haynes. She was their first child but eventually she had a sister named Margaret (Potts) and two brothers named Christopher and Larry. Sadly, Era’s parents and siblings preceded her in death.
She married her first husband, Lewis Charles Hanback, July 7, 1947. Era and Lewis were the proud parents of Jimmy Dale, Veronica Fay Vandenburg (John), Pamela Elaine Little (Larry), Tina Marie Kwek (Mike), and Douglas Charles (Yvonne).
Era was grandma to 18 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and the next great-grandchild will be arriving in December. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis, her son Jimmy, her daughter Pamela, son-in-laws Larry and John, one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Era married her second husband, Fairlie J. Loftis, on October 20, 1979.. His two daughters, Nicole (Loftis) Davidson and Tiffany (Loftis) Tomasino joined the family at a young age. Era’s husband, Fairlie, survives.
In between being a Mom and an employee at Ford Motor Company, she developed a few hobbies. She loved sewing and made clothes and quilts for her children and grandchildren, she loved painting, making beaded jewelry (and even taught a class at her senior center), growing roses, and cooking. A few of her family’s favorites were lemon pie, chocolate cake, chocolate gravy, coleslaw, and green beans that she cooked all day.
Era’s family started to tease her about being a witch. We did this because she had the ability to predict the gender of her grandchildren and great grandchildren! She also told her son Douglas, at the age of 14 that he was going to marry his girlfriend! Douglas and Yvonne have been married for 46 years. When mom was a young girl, she saw two suns in the sky at the same time and believed that is the reason she had the ability to predict.
Era’s family was the most important thing to her. And, her family believes that she was the most important thing to them. We will miss you. We love you.
