Norma Jean Avery (Wagner, Chappell)

June 24, 1931 - January 14, 2026

Norma Jean Avery of Canon City passed away in Hilderbrand Care Center on Janaury 14, 2026 at the age of 94.

Norma  was born in Pueblo, Colorado on June 24, 1931 to Guy Chappell and May Chappell and she attended Central High School.  Norma got married when she was 15 and had her first child when she was 17. She was a stay at home mom until she remarried in 1958 to LeRoy Wagner, she then began working in the restaruant industry. She and LeRoy owned the Elk Cafe and the Joker Drive Inn in Canon City and later the Spudnut Shop and Restaurant. After the death of Leroy she reunited with her first boyfriend Lenus Avery and both worked for various demo companies in the Pueblo and Canon City area until they both retired and moved to Colorado City.  After Lenus' death she moved back to Pueblo where she lived until moving back to Canon City to the Care Center. 

Norma enjoyed spending time with her friends and family . She loved to fish and travel in the RV.  She loved baking and always was making cookies and candy treats as well as decorating cakes.  She loved to bake for her family, friends and the local Hospice Center at Christmas time and was famous for her homemade candy treats. Norma  was honored with 2023 Silver Queen Award from Hildebrand Care Center.  At the care center she enjoyed all the daily activites and especially bingo.  She  also loved to make necklaces and bracelts for her family.  She collected stuffed animals and loved displaying them on her bed everyday.


Norma is survived by her children Daniel Cain(Tori) of Florence, Mark Gottbehuet of Pueblo, LeRae Wagner and Jeffery Wagner of Colorado Springs and many grandchildren, great grand children, neices and nephews. She preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lenus Avery, her son Larry Gottbehuet and 4 of her grandchilren.
