Arnie Freiman, a poet, writer, educator, and lifelong seeker, passed away on September 8, 2025, at the age of 75.
Arnie lived a big, expansive, and deeply intentional life. He was a man driven by curiosity, guided by reflection, and committed to exploring what it means to be fully human. Throughout his life, he traveled widely, founded businesses and educational programs, and dedicated himself to inspiring others to see the possibilities within their own lives.
A natural educator and researcher, Arnie shared his knowledge generously. He was a pioneer in holistic and integrative education, helping introduce new ways of thinking about health, learning, and human connection. His work included founding and contributing to innovative schools and programs, and advocating for more compassionate, whole-person approaches to healing and education.
He was also a passionate activist, committed to civil rights, women’s rights, and accessible healthcare. His life’s work reflected a deep belief in connection, both with oneself and with others.
As an author, Arnie captured his philosophy in his book Befriending Your Stranger, where he invited readers into a journey of healing, self discovery, and reconnection. His writing reflected the same depth, honesty, and compassion that he brought to his life and relationships.
Those who knew Arnie remember him as an extraordinary storyteller, the life of the party, and someone who could connect with anyone. He had a distinctive warmth, a playful spirit, and a laugh that people will never forget. He brought both lightness and depth into every room he entered.
He cherished meaningful connection as much as solitude, and he felt deeply, moved by both the beauty of kindness and the pain of its absence. He loved exploring life’s pleasures, especially sharing great food, wine, and mezcal, and dreaming up big ideas about community, possibility, and what could be created in the world.
When Arnie was diagnosed with lung cancer, it came as a shock. He lived a healthy lifestyle, walking miles each day and taking great care of himself.
Arnie’s passing feels both profound and surreal to those who loved him. His absence is deeply felt, but so is his impact.
He is survived by those who carry forward his spirit, his ideas, and his love. His legacy lives on through his work, his writing, and the countless lives he touched through his teaching, his presence, and his unwavering belief in human potential.
He will be remembered for his curiosity, his generosity, his joy, and his commitment to living a life of meaning and connection.
