Sylvia Ann Carpenter, 92, passed away on March 21, 2026, in Milpitas, CA, having recently moved to the area to be closer to her family. Born in Malden, MA, on April 13, 1933, to Warren Lucius Tucker and Lucy Mildred (Rogers) Tucker, Sylvia remained a New Englander at heart throughout her long life.
A proud graduate of Boston University with a degree in sociology, she married David Patrick Carpenter of Ironwood, MI in 1960. They eventually settled in Mystic, CT, where Sylvia lived for over fifty years. As a familiar and welcoming face at the Groton Public Library for decades, her career aligned with her lifelong love of books.
Beyond the stacks, Sylvia had diverse interests. She was an active member of the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Congregation and a regular on the bowling lanes with her league friends. A devoted patron of the arts, she rarely missed a local symphony performance or a Metropolitan Opera broadcast.
Sylvia’s legacy lives on through her children - Valerie, Vivian, and Roger - as well as her seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She will be laid to rest alongside her beloved David at Forest Vale Cemetery in Jefferson, NH, returning home to her New England roots.
