John G. Wrabel, aged 89, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2026, in Northern California. Mr. Wrabel is survived by his sons (and daughters-in-law) Mark (and Jill) and Chris (and Csilla), as well as his granddaughters Sierra and Isabella. He was preceded in death on May 6, 2013 by his wife, Carole, to whom he was married for 54 years.
John Wrabel was born at Deaconess Hospital and raised in Middleburg Heights and Cleveland, Ohio, graduating from West Technical High School in 1954. He obtained a Bachelor of Music degree from Baldwin Wallace College in 1958, his Bachelor of Music Education in 1959 and a Master of Music Education degree from Kent State University in 1966. He was a music teacher, first at Collinwood High School from 1959-1961 and then at Olmsted Falls Middle School from 1961-1963 and at Olmsted Falls High School from 1963-1989.
He was music director at Shaker Heights Christian Church (1959-1973), then at Olmsted Falls Community Church (1973-1975) then at Lakewood Christian Church (1975-2004) and Handbell Director at Berea Methodist (2008-2014). He also directed the North Olmsted Barbershop Chorus from 1989-2011.
After retirement, he assisted his wife, Carole, with Bright ‘N' Early Daycare. He spent his final years in California to be near his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren, who share his passion for music and performing, perform in musicals.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Riverside Cemetery, 3607 Pearl Road, Cleveland, Ohio 44109. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to NorCal Arts https://www.norcalsota.org/donate/ in John Wrabel's name.
